Submissions for the 4th Annual Art and Olfaction Awards open in October, 2016.

We will accept perfumes first released to market between January 01 and December 31, 2016 in three categories: Artisan, Independent and Experimental. We will accept three submissions per category, per perfume brand or house.

More details and submission rules will be posted in September, 2016.

INDEPENDENT AWARD: Intended to celebrate excellence and vision in independent perfumery, 2016’s Art and Olfaction Independent Award will be presented to two outstanding independent perfumes out of ten finalists. For the sake of the competition, we define an independent perfume as a scent created by a privately-owned company with no more than three separate perfume companies in its holdings, formulated by a perfumer who does not have a direct hand in every aspect of the production of the perfume. Any use of fragrance houses puts a perfume in the independent category, no matter how small the run.

ARTISAN AWARD: Intended to celebrate excellence and vision in artisanal perfumery,  2016’s Art and Olfaction Artisan Award will be presented to two outstanding artisanal perfumes out of ten finalists. For the sake of the competition, we define an artisan perfume as a scent created by a perfumer who has direct ownership in the company, and blends every formulation in-house without the use of a fragrance house at any stage of the process.

SADAKICHI AWARD FOR EXPERIMENTAL SCENT: This award honors the work of people who engage with scent outside of the realm of commercial perfumery. 2016’s Experimental Award will be presented to one outstanding experimental scent project out of five finalists. For the sake of the competition, we define an experimental scent project as a project in any arts practice that incorporates the use of scent in a significant manner.


RESEARCH

2_SCIBUASWe have teamed up with Dr. Claus Noppeney at The Scent Culture Institute (in affiliation with Bern University of Applied Sciences) to promote the artisan and independent perfume world through considered research.

The data created by the The Art and Olfaction Awards will partly be used for academic research purposes and for further developing The Art and Olfaction Awards. The anonymous results will be made available in publications and at industry events.
